Itinerary

Mafra National Palace

The first stop is in Mafra, where we discover the massive, monumental and colossal Baroque royal palace. The extravagant rooms of the royal apartments are furnished with exceptional pieces of 18th-century furniture and paintings. The grandiose monument was built to celebrate the birth of a daughter of King João V. We stroll through beautiful eight-square-kilometer royal hunting ground, and discover the library considered one of the finest in Europe! It contains 35,000 volumes, including the precious first edition Os Lusiadas by Luis Vaz Camões, the most respected Portuguese poet, a trilingual Bible from the 16th century, and the earliest edition of Homer in Greek.

Mafra Palace Library

The Library, occupying the largest and most prestigious room in the building, is one of the most significant Enlightenment Libraries in Europe, with around 36,000 volumes amassed through royal commission. It is 85 meters long and 9,5 meters wide, built in the form of a cross and paved with multicolored limestone floor and Rocaille shelves.

José Franco Village

Not far from Mafra we explore the typical village of José Franco. This fascinating and somehow surreal miniature village showcases the traditional culture and handicrafts of the surrounding area, crafted using traditional techniques by renowned Portuguese potter and sculptor José Silos Franco. During the visit is worth a try the traditional bread with sausage (pão com chouriço). It is a delicacy! There we also find a souvenir store selling handmade pottery from all around the country. This miniature village depicts the true story of the region and attracts hundreds of travelers who pass this way. There is a permanent exhibition of the ceramic works of José Franco.

Ericeira

Ericeira is a charming Portuguese fishing town that is situated along a coastline of outstanding surfing beaches. This powerful and reliable surf has transformed peaceful Ericeira into a surfing mecca; boasting both a chilled daytime scene and a lively nightlife, along with excellent accommodation options and top-rated tourist facilities. Today Ericeira is a perfect fusion of Portuguese heritage with an ultra-cool surfing ambience, where traditional fishermen’s cottages nestle amongst trendy lounge bars and cafes. Ericeira is adored by the Portuguese, who flock to the town in the summer months, drawn by the beautiful beaches and delicious seafood - for which the town is renowned for!

Lunch Time

The beaches of Ericeira

Pescadores beach is the central beach of Ericeira and is very scenic overlooking the fishing harbour and surrounded by cliffs. The beach is popular with families and sunbathers as it is sheltered from the strong regional winds that often buffer the coastlisheer ne.
