Portugal on the Global Stage: Five Wineries Named Among the World’s Best

Portugal is once again shining brightly on the world wine tourism map. Forbes, in partnership with experts from Virgin Wines, has revealed The World’s 50 Best Wineries 2025’ and five Portuguese wineries are on the list of the best on the planet: Quinta da Aveleda, Fitapreta, Quinta do Bomfim, Torre de Palma and Herdade do Sobroso. If your ideal itinerary combines wine, scenery and history, make a note of these incredible destinations.

Vinho Verde – Quinta da Aveleda (No. 6)

In the heart of the Vinho Verde region, Aveleda is a classic with soul. Founded in 1870 by Manoel Pedro Guedes, it combines rigour in the vineyard with one of the most beautiful private gardens in Portugal with hundreds of species, including ancient cork oaks, camellias and a eucalyptus tree that is around 300 years old. It is the ideal setting for a Vinho Verde (Green Wine) tasting, accompanied by a walk at nature’s rhythm.

On the outskirts of Évora, Fitapreta is the restless project of António Maçanita, housed in a restored 16th-century palace. The winery has gained fame for revitalising indigenous grape varieties and daring to produce wines with character, such as Palpite Pinto and Branco de Talha, considered the first Portuguese white wine aged in amphorae. A journey through Alentejo traditions, with a touch of elegance.

Douro – Quinta do Bomfim (No. 31)

Owned by the Symington family since 1912, Quinta do Bomfim is a historic symbol. Among century-old barrels and a museum honouring five generations, visitors can savour vintage Port wines and dry wines on the terrace over the Douro. Not to miss the ‘Vineyards’ exhibition, a tribute to the region’s wine-growing heritage and the exemplary management that keeps it alive.
