Uncover the mystique of the Knights Templar by following their trail on this small-group guided tour from Lisbon.
Marvel with the Convento de Cristo, one of Portugal’s most unique and impressive architectural monuments, listed as the UNESCO World Heritage site. Visit Tomar city, former home of the Order of The Knights Templar, a beautiful, mysterious and magical place.
Tomar may seem like a simple riverfront town, but it packs a strong historical punch. Set on the banks of the Nabão River, this small city is home to the impressive Castle of Tomar and the Convent of Christ, a 12th-century UNESCO World Heritage Site and the former medieval headquarters of the Knights Templar.
In 1983, UNESCO awarded the classification of world heritage to the Templar Castle and the Convent of the Knights of Christ in Tomar, a unique monument in the history of the western world. Built on a site that was originally used for Roman worship, this vast monumental complex illustrates seven centuries of Portugal's history and contains several important mementos of decisive moments in the history of the western world.
Then, take a break for lunch at a local restaurant (own expense). Lunchtime, based on your preference, but we advise you to have lunch in Medieval Tavern. That is the best way to taste Portuguese gastronomy and feel like real Knight of Templar.
The Praça da República (Square of the Republic) is a beautiful spot to sit and enjoy the panorama. It’s surrounded by 17th century architecture, including Tomar’s Town Hall.
After lunch time we will visit Church of Santa Maria do Olival. The church was built in the second half of the 12th century by the provincial master of the Order of the Knights Templar in Portugal, Gualdim Pais. It was used as a burial place for the Knights Templar of Tomar and, later, by the Knights of the Order of Christ, which succeeded the Templars in the 14th century.
The Castle of Almourol is regarded as Portugal’s most beautiful castle! Situated on a small cliffy island in the middle of the Tagus River, Almourol Castle is one of the most significant military Medieval monuments, which best evokes the memory of the Knights Templar in Portugal. With the extinction of the Order of the Knights Templar, the castle was somehow abandoned. It was not until the 19th century that the castle was reinvented according to a Romanticism ideal of the Medieval flair.
