History Reborn
The Return of the
Tejo Lake
The Soul of Avenida da Liberdade is Back
“Lisbon has recovered one of its most iconic corners. After a thorough rehabilitation, the historic Tejo Lake, originally built in 1780, has been reopened to the public on Avenida da Liberdade. Safer, more beautiful, and with new underwater lighting, this reservoir is a living symbol of the capital’s connection to its river.”
A Rehabilitation that Unites History and Safety
The Tejo Lake was not only cleaned; it was saved from decades of degradation. Constant infiltrations threatened the 18th-century structure, requiring meticulous technical intervention.
Structural Reinforcement: The reservoir walls were reinforced to eliminate water leaks that affected the soil of the Avenue.
Safety and Modernity: The maximum depth was adjusted to 60 centimeters, ensuring pedestrian safety, complemented by a new underwater lighting system.
Artistic Restoration: The statue crowning the composition, metal railings, and stone borders have been fully restored to their original 1780 appearance.

A New Chapter for the Avenue
This reopening is the first step in a larger plan by the City Hall to revitalize Avenida da Liberdade. The goal is to make the side avenues of our “Champs-Élysées” more welcoming and vibrant, preserving the historical heritage that makes Lisbon unique.
