Hidden Secrets of Portugal
The Hidden Side of Sintra: Queen Amélia’s Lost Throne
It is a place where the veil between our world and a fantasy epic feels paper-thin. In fact, it’s almost outrageous that Sintra isn’t the primary filming location for every major fantasy movie. Where are the elves resting in the moss? Where are the wizards dueling at the base of the cliffs? In Sintra, you don’t need a cinema screen—you just need to look a little closer at the landscape.
The Mystery of the Queen Amélia Throne
Hidden within the dense, emerald labyrinth of the Pena Park, specifically at the Heights of Santa Catarina (Alto de Santa Catarina), lies a secret “Reason Number 157” to visit the Palácio da Pena: The Queen Amélia Throne.

This isn’t a gold-and-velvet chair kept behind velvet ropes. This is a throne carved directly from massive boulders, weathered by time and decorated with traditional azulejos. The seat is covered in resin, preserved just as it was when Queen Amélia used to retreat here.
A Royal View Preserved in Time
The image below captures the throne in its entirety—a primitive yet elegant seat that offers one of the most stunning, unobstructed views of the Atlantic coastline and the surrounding peaks.

The actual throne at Alto de Santa Catarina, where the Queen would spend hours painting the horizon.
A Sanctuary of Stone and Tiles
It was her sanctuary—a quiet, shaded spot where she would sit to paint the sweeping landscapes of the Atlantic coast. When you sit there, surrounded by the scent of damp earth and ancient trees, you don’t just feel like a tourist; you feel like a character in a fairy tale.

Why You Need to Go Off-Path
While everyone else is queuing for the interior rooms of the Palace, the real magic of Sintra is found in these “lost” corners. Whether you’re hunting for hidden thrones, imagining pink unicorns in the mist, or waiting for a dragon to crest the Moorish Castle walls, Sintra never stops giving.
