🏆 The Best Neighborhoods to Experience the Festival

Popular Marches: “Somos Lisboa, Somos Europa”

The grand parade down Avenida da Liberdade begins at 9:00 PM on June 12th. In 2026, the theme celebrates the 40th anniversary of Portugal’s accession to the EEC with the motto “Somos Lisboa, Somos Europa” (We are Lisbon, We are Europe). Twenty neighborhoods compete in an explosion of typically Lisbon costumes and decorative arches.

💡 Golden Tip

If you want to view the parade up close and without paying for grandstand tickets, aim to arrive on the Avenue before 8:00 PM.

❤ Alfama & Vila Berta: The Heart of Tradition

Alfama: This is the epicentre of the Saints. Largo de São Miguel fills up with stages, paper garlands, and smoky improvised grills. It is the perfect place to grab the traditional grilled sardine served on a rustic slice of bread (typically between 1.50€ and 2.00€).

Vila Berta (Graça): A historical former working-class courtyard that morphs into one of the most scenic and photogenic street parties—an absolute favorite.

✦ Mouraria & Misericórdia: Alternative & Views

Mouraria (Largo da Rosa): A wonderful multicultural street party with extensive vegetarian food choices and world music playing instead of just traditional folk/pimba tunes.

Misericórdia (São Pedro de Alcântara): Pairs concerts by well-known Portuguese acts with one of the most breathtaking, illuminated nighttime views across downtown Lisbon.

🧭 4 Essential Survival Tips for June 12th Night

01. Forget the Car or Taxi

On the night of June 12th, traffic in the old town comes to a complete standstill and roads are closed. The Lisbon Metro operates with extended hours and is easily your best option.

02. Watch Your Belongings

Due to tight crowds in older quarters like Alfama, hold your backpack on the front of your chest and keep your mobile phone in securely zipped pockets.

03. The Sweet Basil Ritual

Don’t leave without a pot of sweet basil. Remember: tradition dictates you must ruffle it with your hand and smell your hand, never smell the plant directly with your nose!

04. Go Before the 12th

To enjoy the exact same scents and grilled delicacies but with half the crowds, explore the street parties during the first week of June. It’s much more relaxed.

Discover Lisbon’s Rich History Before the Big Party

The street parties come alive at dusk, but the absolute best way to truly connect with the soul of these historic neighborhoods (like Alfama and Baixa) is by exploring them in the daytime.
