Azores Islands

Portugal Day 2026:
Official Celebrations and the Charms of Terceira Island

“The Day of Portugal, Camões, and the Portuguese Communities is celebrated annually on June 10. More than just a holiday, this date is a profound tribute to Lusophone culture, our history, and the millions of Portuguese spread across the globe.”

In 2026, the official celebrations hold an even more special meaning: they coincide with the 50th anniversary of regional autonomy for the Azores and Madeira. For this reason, the President of the Republic chose the stunning Terceira Island, in the Azores, as the grand host for this year’s celebrations.

Whether you are following the festivities or planning a last-minute getaway, we have prepared a guide with the highlights of the official program and what you absolutely cannot miss on the island!

🌋 What to Explore on Terceira Island: Between History and Nature

Beyond the official ceremonies, Terceira Island offers a vibrant setting where “old world” architecture seamlessly blends with breathtaking natural volcanic landscapes. Here are the must-visit spots:

🏰 The Historical Center of Angra do Heroísmo

Classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Angra do Heroísmo enchants every visitor with its historic palaces, colorful streets, and secular churches. Do not miss visiting the Sé Cathedral and relaxing at Praça Velha. For an incredible panoramic view over the bay and the ocean, hike up to Monte Brasil, a natural monument with untouched trails.

🕳️ A “Journey to the Center of the Earth”

Did you know that in Terceira it is possible to literally walk inside a dormant volcano? Algar do Carvão, situated in the caldera of the Guilherme Moniz volcano, is one of the very few places in the world where this experience is real and absolutely unmissable. You can complement this geological route with Gruta do Natal (Christmas Cave) and Furnas de Enxofre.

🌊 Unique Natural Pools

If the weather invites you for a refreshing dip in the Atlantic, the island is packed with excellent coastal bathing areas:

  • To the West: The famous Zona Balnear da Silveira (natural pools located very close to the historical center) and Zona Balnear do Negrito, famous for its flat volcanic basalt slabs.
  • To the East: The beautiful Piscina Natural do Refugo (where you can enjoy the “Gentes do Mar e da Terra” walk) and Praia and Piscinas Naturais da Salga, one of the most complete and spacious bathing areas in the region.
