The Jazz festival in Monserrate returns for its third edition, from the 6th to the 28th of September, bringing something new: the presence of international artists. The event takes place on Fridays and Saturdays, offering a rich and varied program.
Throughout the month of September, Parque de Monserrate will be the setting for eight sunset concerts, four family-friendly concerts and a free masterclass. In total, 55 artists, both national and international, will be present in this edition.
With artistic direction now under the responsibility of Inês Laginha, Jazz in Monserrate’s mission is to unite the public, students and jazz professionals. The festival aims to be a “meeting point of cultures, generations and experiences”, reflecting both the fusion of architectural styles of the palace that dominates the lawn, and the exotic atmosphere of the garden that hosts this event, as highlighted in the Parques press release from Sintra.
The official opening of the Jazz em Monserrate 2024 program will be led by Perico Sambeat, on September 5th, at 7pm. This concert was initially scheduled for June 8th, but was postponed due to bad weather. Sambeat will be accompanied by a trio of talented Portuguese musicians: João Pedro Coelho on piano, Romeu Tristão on double bass and Bruno Pedroso on drums.
Jazz at sunset in Monserrate
From 7pm onwards, several musicians, including young talents and established artists, will perform on the stage located on the lawn of Parque de Monserrate, providing unforgettable musical moments at sunset.
Among the artists who will perform in September are names such as Eduardo Cardinho, André Rosinha, Emma Frank, the duo Augusto Baschera and João Bernardo, Margarida Campelo and Alexandre Frazão.
Tickets for the sunset concerts are available for 15 euros on the event’s official website. Ticket holders will have access to free transport, provided by Scotturb on festival days.
Families and young people discover “What is jazz?”
Saturday mornings, on the 7th, 14th, 21st and 28th of September, will be dedicated to families and younger audiences. From 11 am, singer and pedagogue Catarina dos Santos, in collaboration with Jazz students from the National Conservatory’s Artistic School of Music, invites everyone to explore “What is jazz?”, through a journey through the history of this musical genre.
At the end of each session, there will be a jam session, allowing young jazz students to join the musicians who performed on stage and experience playing together.
Concerts for families are free with the purchase of an entrance ticket to the Park and Palace of Monserrate.
Free masterclass with Jorge Rossy
On Saturday, September 21st, at 2pm, Catalan drummer and vibraphonist Jorge Rossy will lead a free masterclass, focused on “awareness of the roles that each musician plays in the relationship with themselves, with the band, with the music and with the public”.
Furthermore, the class will help young musicians to better understand how to manage the expectations of colleagues and the public, what the life of a professional musician is like and how these factors influence music. The masterclass will also address the sociopolitical role of jazz musicians throughout history.
Participation in the masterclass is free, but requires prior registration, with applications open until August 31st.
