The Portuguese GP of Formula One is close to being officially confirmed for the vacancy of May 2, currently open date on the world F1 calendar.

The English Autosport confirms, referring that F1 gave the green light to the Portuguese GP to occupy the vacant place in the calendar, with teams to be informed today (11 February 2021).

After weeks of uncertainty about the composition of F1’s 2021 calendar opening races, the difficult situation of the Coronavirus in Portugal had raised doubts about whether Portugal could secure a slot in the calendar. But after talks between F1 and the organizers, in the last few days, to have a better understanding of the situation in the country, it is understood that both parties are happy that the event can go ahead ”.

Sources with knowledge of the situation say that Formula One has committed itself to Portugal occupying the “TBC” place in the long-scheduled calendar for May 2. The decision on Portugal means that Bahrain will open the season on 28 March, with Imola hosting the second round on 18 April. It is understood that the teams will be formally informed of the plans of the F1 Commission calendar that will take place today (11 February 2021).
