Do you want to avoid the classic tours that the majority of tourists join and rather experience something else? Join this wonderfull tour rich in program combining most visiting attractions with less known cultural and historical treasures of Portugal. The first stop is in Mafra, where we discover the massive, monumental and colossal Baroque royal palace. The gold that flowed in from the rich mines of Brazil made this vast construction possible in 1735. It was ordered by King João V who made this building one of the biggest Baroque palaces in the 18th century. This remarkable accomplishment is the basis of Nobel-prize received by José Saramago for his novel "Baltasar and Blimunda". The extravagant rooms of the royal appartments are furnished with exceptional pieces of 18th century furniture and paintings. The grandiose monument was built to celebrate the birth of a daughter of King João V. The palace includes the royal hospital with a pharmacy containing bizarre medical instruments. We stroll through beautiful eight-square-kilometer royal hunting ground, and discover the library considered one of the finest in Europe! It contains 35,000 volumes, including the precious first edition Os Lusiadas by Luis Vaz Camões, the most respected Portuguese poet, a trilingual Bible from the 16th century, and the earliest edition of Homer in Greek.
Not far from Mafra we explore the typical village of José Franco. This fascinating and somehow surreal miniature village showcases the traditional culture and handicrafts of the surrounding area, crafted using traditional techniques by renowned Portuguese potter and sculptor José Silos Franco. During the visit is worth a try the traditional bread with sausage (pão com chouriço). It is a delicacy! There we also find a souvenir store selling handmade pottery from all around the country. This miniature village depicts the true story of the region and attracts hundreds of travellers who pass this way. There is a permanent exhibition of the ceramic works of José Franco. Next stop is the popular fishing village of Ericeira. Take a relaxing stroll through historical center and learn about the history of this authentic fishing town. Take the opportunity to experience some seafood speciality for your lunch. Afterwards, the tour continues to Sintra driving along rural and natural landscapes. There we admire Sintra's majestic monuments and stroll through the historical downtown looking as time stopped there at the medieval time.
