Alfama is where it all began - the oldest and most picturesque district. Its face has been created over the centuries by various civilizations that occupied the Iberian Peninsula. Initially been pre-Romans, who built their simple settlement on the hill of Alfama. It was there, where during the Moorish domination (8th-12th cent.) was built a fortified citadel, now known as the famous castle of St. Jorge. In the 12th century the Christian Reconquest has significantly changed Alfama when it became the fishermen neighborhood populated mostly by poor and working class. At the beginning of the 18th century, when Alfama was dirty and depressing space as a result of unhealthy living conditions the streets started vibrate by typical melancholic music "Fado" sang by locals to heal their sadness. Today, Fado is a symbol of Lisbon and considered the most valuable Portuguese folk music attracted many people to Alfama district, where they can experience unique dinner accompanied with live Fado music. The tour starts in front of the historical railway station "Rossio" considered being one of the most majestic constructions of Downtown (Baixa) in Lisbon.
